Garth Greenwell (1978, Louisville, Kentucky) schreef in 2010 een novelle, Mitko, gebaseerd op de vier jaar die hij in Sofia verbleef, en won daarmee de Miami University Press Novella Prize. Hij studeerde aan de Washington University en aan Harvard en publiceerde in onder andere The Yale Review en Poetry International.
