Bush 43 heeft geen traditioneel boek geschreven over zijn presidentschap. Niet een boek met een aanloop en een climax. Hij heeft gekozen voor een bijzondere aanpak. Hij heeft de belangrijkste onderwerpen van beleid per hoofdstuk behandeld en beschreven hoe hij tot besluiten kwam. Je word bevestigd in de opvatting dat deze man wel erg weinig intellectuele bagage met zich mee nam in het Witte Huis, maar dat doet er eigenlijk niet toe. Bush geeft zijn gedachtengang weer, zijn manier van denken zonder de negatieve zaken te schuwen.
Dat maakt dit een uiterst eerlijk boek en een must voor een ieder die zich acht jaar lang heeft lopen ergeren aan de neo-conservatieven.

An interesting memoir about the personal and political life of George W. Bush. The writing style is clear, simple, and easy to follow. If you are interested in how Bush made his most important decisions in life, you should read this book.

However, I did expect some more profound thoughts from a former US president. It all stayed a bit shallow. Bush describes events and decisions as they happen, but does not explain his political ideology extensively. I found the self congratulatory tone and lack of personal criticism distracting.

But, no matter what you think of him, George W. Bush is an interesting character, who was faced with very difficult situations during his presidency. Because he was at the center of power during 9/11, Katrina, Afghanistan, Iraq and the start of the economic downturn in 2007-2008, it is worth reading his side of the story. However, don't read this book if you expect revolutionary new insights.
