It might be hard even for middle-aged Leyton Orient fans to imagine their side hob-nobbing in the top flight alongside the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. This book chronicles the story of how the Os won promotion to the old First Division in 1961-62 and subsequently enjoyed their Season in the Sun. The key to that success was manager Johnny Carey, who in his playing days was a star with Matt Busbys Manchester United. Carey a genial pipe-smoking Irishman fashioned a bunch of promising Orient players and guided them up among the elite. Orient achieved their promotion with style, playing quality football that earned admiration from all quarters. Though Orients stay in the top flight was brief, they claimed the famous scalps of Manchester United, Liverpool, and champions-elect Everton, enjoying an unforgettable season which Orient fans of the day wouldnt have missed for the world.
