Geschreven bij The Reality Dysfunction

De schrijver wordt duidelijk zelf erg blij van alle moeilijke woorden en complexe sci-fi concepten die hij heeft bedacht want er gaat geen zin voorbij waarin iets niet in pijnlijk detail wordt uitgelegd. Het is vanaf het begin al lastig om door te komen want het gaat ten koste van het verhaal.

Dit in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld de boeken van The Expanse of Tchaikovsky waarin het verhaal de focus heeft en sci-fi de achtergrond is. Daar is ook meer ruimte voor karakterontwikkeling en de verhalen voelen veel natuurlijker. Door alle uitleg voel je je ook de hele tijd een buitenstaander.

Het verhaal zelf heeft een aantal interessante onderwerpen (mens-biotech hybrides); maar wijdt te veel uit op het in detail beschrijven van de omgeving en technologie (5 paginas over de paringscyclus van een levend ruimteschip? Skip.).

Uiteindelijk op 1/3 weggelegd. Ik ga lekker Tchaikovskys nieuwe boek Children of Memory lezen.
