Fernand L?ger (1881-1955), one of the twentieth-century's most important classic modern artists, was a great mediator: in his enthusiasm for the cool, mechanical side of modernism, he understood how to give form to the emerging new art, which was especially attractive to American eyes.nnThis richly illustrated publication covers the artist's entire oeuvre, from the Cubist-influenced early work to the cheerful, large-format later work. Special attention is paid to the American dimension of L?ger's oeuvre: the artist visited the USA several times and was in exile in New York from 1940 to 1945. He was impressed by this enormous country, its architecture, dynamics, and modernity, and consequently made some of his most important works there. Furthermore, the volume traces his remarkable effect on American artists-primarily on Roy Lichtenstein und Ellsworth Kelly-but also on other late twentieth-century artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Al Held, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol.
