Según el autor, hay tres hechos de enorme importancia en el contexto europeo, que repercuten en la historia reciente en todo el mundo: los cambios del mapa europeo tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, con el derrumbamiento de las monarquías de Europa Central y de la Rusia zarista; la división de Europa en dos bloques -liberalista y marxista- tras las Segunda Guerra Mundial, y la descomposición de la ideología marxista. Liberalismo y marxismo coincidían en negar a la religión el derecho y la capacidad de plasmar el futuro común de la humanidad, pero la segunda mitad del siglo XX ha puesto en evidencia que no puede construirse el futuro de la humanidad a espaldas de la religión. En este libro, Ratzinger busca aclarar los fundamentos inalienables de Europa, de una profunda identidad cristiana. Para ello, tras analizar los problemas morales de nuestra época, analiza qué debe hacer la Iglesia -y qué no- ante la falta de paz y de justicia.
