Moving in its simplicity, it tells a racy and humorous story of his introduction to flying at Point Cook, Victoria, in Bristol Boxkites and other primitive contraptions before proceeding via England to France as a member of a famous fighting squadron — No. 4 Australian Flying Corps.
Harry Cobby graphically tells what it was like to be fighting for one’s life a mile above the earth in a Sopwith Camel, without a parachute, and pitted against the pilots of the Richthofen Circus. A gripping tale, it is full of high spirited escapades which provided a much needed diversion from the grim realities of daily life and death.
The book contains over 100 unique photographs, most of them published for the first time, and has a superb collection of color illustrations by the well-known aviation artist Norman Clifford.
