beschouwd als de ietwat bizarre Amerikaanse tegenhanger van Polly Harvey. Haar confronterende
relatiesongs zitten vol tegenstellingen: brutaal en seksueel provocerend en tegelijk onzeker en

singer/songwriter, maar veeleer als een ware rock & roll-feministe. Elizabeth Clark Phair
wordt bij haar geboorte geadopteerd door een vader die geneeskundige is en een moeder die les
geeft aan een kunstacademie. Ze heeft een oudere, eveneens geadopteerde broer en groeit op in
een dure buitenwijk van Winnetka, Illinois. Aanvankelijk wil ze kunstenares worden. De
kunstprojecten waarmee ze zich gedurende haar studieperiode bezig houdt, bestaan voornamelijk
uit houtskooltekeningen van verziekte gezichten. Op de universiteit van Oberin, Ohio, raakt ze
echter betrokken bij de lokale muziekscene en begint ze songs te schrijven. Eenmaal terug in
Chicago gaat ze in haar slaapkamer cassettes vol songs in elkaar knutselen. Deze cassettes, die ze
zelf Girly Sounds doopt, beginnen te circuleren in de undergroundscene van de oostkust en
komen uiteindelijk terecht bij het Newyorkse Matador-label. Exile In Guyville wordt alom laaiend
enthousiast ontvangen. De titel verwijst enerzijds naar de song Guyville van de bevriende groep
Urge Overkill en anderzijds naar de Rolling Stones-plaat Exile On Main St., waarop de achttien
songs het vrouwelijke antwoord vormen. Op Whip-Smart produceert ze de subtiel zwalkende mix
van folky melodieën en garagerock samen met haar vaste band: gitarist Casey Rice, bassist LeRoy
Bach en drummer Brad Wood. De andermaal juichende reacties weten Liz Phair, die behept is met
een notoire podiumangst, er ook dan niet toe te bewegen de oversteek naar Europa te
wagen.
