Goede schildering van de Griekse en Romeinse wereld, waarin Jezus geboren werd. Het veel-godendom van de oudheid en hoe dat functioneerde wordt helder neergezet. De auteur blijft met respect naar het christendom kijken en legt uit hoe Jezus God werd en hoe de theologie door de eerste eeuwen heen zich heeft gevormd.
