Productbeschrijving

The great modem artist Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) is best known for his exuberant sculptures celebrating the women of his native region, the Mediterranean coast of France just north of Spain. Yet Maillol was also an extremely important printmaker and book illustrator, with particular affinities for the world of ancient Greece and Rome. In his illustrations of the works of Vergil, Horace, Ovid, Longus and Lucian, as in his sculpture, he continued to glorify the female form.
His genius in this regard is nowhere more evident than in the 35 magnificent lithographs reproduced in this volume. The prints were originally executed by Maillol for a French- language edition of The Dialogues of the Courtesans, a series of short satirical pieces dealing with the everyday doings of professional “kept women.” Written by the Greek comic author Lucian of Samosata in the second century A.D., these witty dialogues provided Maillol with a springboard for the creation of a series of exquisite, sensuous nudes—among the finest works of his maturity.
Unlike the majority of Maillol’s book illustrations, which were executed in the medium of woodcut, these lithographs benefit from the great freedom of rendering possible with a lithographic crayon. Indeed, the voluptuous contours, earthy eroticism and confident flowing lines of these nudes suggests Maillol's sculptures come to life.
This Dover volume, painstakingly reproduced from a very rare and valuable edition of “The Dialogues,” recaptures the delicate nuances of tone and shading, the sense of calm and order, and the overall balance and unity that characterize Maillol’s finest works. Nearly all the lithographs are full size; only seven are somewhat smaller than the originals.
Admirers of Maillol, lovers of fine lithography, anyone with a taste for graphic art of the highest quality will want to own this newest low-cost addition to the Dover Art Library.
Dover original republication of all the illustrations from Lucien: Dialogues des courtisanes, conceived and produced by Henri Creuzevault and Dina Viemy; printed by Pierre Bricage, Paris, 1948. Publisher’s note written especially for this edition.
