Dit is erg goed!
John Gwynne weet hoe hij gevechtsscenes moet beschrijven, dat is een ding dat zeker is.
Al lezende maak je kennis met best een flink aantal karakters en moet je aardig wat namen en plaatsen onthouden. De kaart aan het begin van het boek is daar erg handig bij. Maar het verhaal neemt je ook echt mee de Banished Lands in. Mooi beschreven landschappen en plaatsen, goed beschreven karakters waar je al snel een band mee vormt. Meesterlijk gedaan!
De personen komen tot leven voor je ogen en ook de interactie tussen de karakters is erg goed. Je leeft echt met ze mee. Dit eerste boek is duidelijk bedoeld om de lijnen uit te zetten naar iets groters, een hernieuwde oorlog tussen de goden. Hoe dit gaat uitpakken blijft vooralsnog een raadsel, maar de toon is gezet en je weet dat er nog aardig wat epische gebeurtenissen zullen volgen. En toch zijn het ook de 'kleine' momentjes in het verhaal die je pakken.
Als je van epic fantasy houdt is dit zeer zeker een aanrader.Vond je dit een nuttige review?20 -
Great debut novel

John Gwynne really hits the mark as his first novel in the series makes for a stunning debut. I had the fortune to have a friend of mine recommend this book. He had overwhelmed me with lauding words for months on a row and I, as any sane person, considered it with scepticism. But how right his enthousiasm turned out to be.
The book is broadly imaginative, packed in a world turbulent world, filled with magic at every corner, although lurking in the shadows. The story talks from multiple POV's in a sense that it is very similar to GRRM's 'A song of Ice and Fire', telling the tale of kings(houses) fighting and quarreling, whilst awaiting the rise of something more powerful. But that is where the similarity ends.
The writing style, much to my pleasure, felt like that of a thriller, picking up and never settling down again. The story jumps from one exciting scene to another and though from time to time predictable, the story still felt as exciting as can be.
I highly recommend this book. I obviously enjoyed this one and will be reading the rest of the series.Vond je dit een nuttige review?10 -

Goed geschreven debut van Gwynne. Het plot bouwt langzaam maar zeker op naar een epische strijd tussen goed en kwaad. De personages zijn goed geschreven en je gaat je al snel hechten aan de personages. Aanrader voor fans van fantasy genre!

Erg goed geschreven en met veel plezier gelezen! En dat mag gezegd worden, want veel recent geschreven fantasie boeken zijn erg matig en teleurstellend. Dit is een uitzondering!
