Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia, 1927-2014) was een van de grootste schrijvers van deze tijd. In 1967 verscheen zijn eerste roman, ‘Het kwade uur’, in vertaling bij Meulenhoff. Een jaar later verscheen ‘Honderd jaar eenzaamheid’, dat in 1972 in Nederlandse vertaling uitkwam en wereldwijd zou uitgroeien tot zijn bekendste werk. In de decennia daarna verscheen al zijn werk in vertaling bij Meulenhoff. In 1982 ontving hij de Nobelprijs voor de literatuur. Van zijn boeken werden wereldwijd miljoenen exemplaren verkocht García Márquez overleed in 2014 op 87-jarige leeftijd in zijn woonplaats Mexico-Stad.

The old soldier and his wife mourn the brutal killing of their only son, and the story of their struggle against poverty and sickness culminates in the Colonel's defiant refusal to part with his cherished fighting cock, however serious the consequences.
The moving narrative pays tribute to the resilience of human nature and man's will to survive in the face of heavy odds. The novel also throws light on the turbulent religious and political troubles in Latin America.
