Antonio Tabucchi
Antonio Tabucchi is one of Italy's most acclaimed contemporary writers. Born in Pisa in 1943, Tabucchi is the author of twenty novels and short story collections, nine of which have been translated into English, together with numerous essays and plays. Twice shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize, he has been awarded many prestigious prizes, including the Prix Medicis etranger for Indian Nocturne and the Premio Campiello, the Premio Viareggio and the Aristeion Prize for Pereira Maintains. Emeritus professor at the University of Siena, he has taught at Bard College in New York, the Ecole de Hautes Etudes and the College de France in Paris, and currently divides his time between Paris and Lisbon.

Una Toscana secreta y embrujada, una estación de la Riviera, una Lisboa baudelairliana, un rally de coches de época, un perseguidor implacable de aire distinguido en un tren de Bombay a Madrás. Los cuentos de Tabucchi parecen, en una primera lectura, aventuras existenciales, retratos de viajeros irónicos y desesperados. Pero la aparente sintonía entre lo real y lo narrado se transforma de golpe en turbación y desconcierto. A modo de oblicuos «cuentos filosóficos», las historias de Tabucchi se convierten en una reflexión en torno al azar y al riesgo de escoger, una tentativa de observar los intersticios que atraviesan el tejido de la existencia. En las páginas de Tabucchi planea una inquietud metafísica que evoca Piero della Francesca, Giorgio De Chirico y Pirandello. Pero este escritor, que ama los personajes excéntricos y las vidas fracasadas, carga sus enigmas con una luz extraña: sus jeroglíficos «policíacos» son las pesquisas de un investigador que no busca respuestas, sino un mensaje, una señal, una aparición.
