Samenvatting

Once Archduke Albrecht and Archduchess Isabella had taken on Rubens in 1609 as court painter, the French, English and Spanish monarchs also sought his services. In his work for them Rubens reveals himself as the manager of major cycles, like those painted for Maria de' Medici, the Banqueting House and the Torre de la Parada. He knew Europe's cr?me de la cr?me, from monarchs to courtiers, from ambassadors to military leaders. Rubens depicts many of his diplomatic meetings in superb portraits. The master also found time to devote himself with equal skill to other less obvious disciplines, as testified by his attractive tapestries. nnThe major Rubens exhibition organised by the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille displays the full scale of his artistic diversity. This voyage of discovery amongst paintings, oil sketches, drawings and less well-known works such as tapestry series is the largest overview of this genius's work since 1977. The works are presented in chronological order: his first years, the Italian success, the commissions for Antwerp's ruling burgher class and for churches on his return. Pieter Paul Rubens occupies a solitary summit in European art history, equalled by few in terms of universality and creative force.
