Samenvatting

it allows entropy to be defined and a framework for the theory to be constructed.

The first part of this book explains the essence of statistical physics without going into details such as Liouville’s theorem or ergodic theorem, which are difficult for beginners and unnecessary for actual application of the statistical mechanics.

This book provides a comprehensive presentation of the basics of statistical physics. The first part explains the essence of statistical physics and how it provides a bridge between microscopic and macroscopic phenomena, allowing one to derive quantities such as entropy. Here the author avoids going into details such as Liouville’s theorem or the ergodic theorem, which are difficult for beginners and unnecessary for the actual application of the statistical mechanics. In the second part, statistical mechanics is applied to various systems which, although they look different, share the same mathematical structure. In this way readers can deepen their understanding of statistical physics. The book also features applications to quantum dynamics, thermodynamics, the Ising model and the statistical dynamics of free spins.

Yoshioka could be a great summary for those who already master the subject. But for any undergraduate introductory course (what the titel seems to suggest) I think it is too brief and formal. Deriviations are often very hard to follow because he tries to write it short and complete at the same time, which gives rise to a very formal and hard to follow style of writing.

In the first part of the book he explains the basic ideas behind statsitical physics in just 40 pages. He doesn't give so much examples and hardly any excercises (while in my opinion this should be the most important part of the book, filled with excercizes and examples). Of course 40 pages could be enough to explain this kind of stuff, but since he writes very formal it is very hard to follow, takes ages to read, and at the end he doesn't explain it in a very clear way (at least that is how I experienced it when it was used for our introductory course on statistical physics).

The other 160 pages are about calcualting heat capacities, elasticity of rubber, phase transitions, Ising model, Landau theory, free-fermion gass and free-boson gass. But once again, the theory is all very dense. I think this part of the book is very very, very hard to read for those who follow a first introductory course on statistical physics, especially when you have to work through this short and formal style of writing.

Once again, it might be great for a summary, but not what you want from a book on an introductory course. If you are going to buy this for an introductory course you are almost certainly going to find yourself looking for another book in a few weeks from now.
