Having only ever learned the knit-stitch from my mom I bought this book and taught myself the rest. I was amazed at how quickly and easily I picked up the different techniques and my first ever project (the alien scarf) turned out great! The instructions were very clear (even for a left-handed knitter like myself) and the projects I have knitted up so far have all turned out great. Seeing so many great but overpriced hats, scarves and mittens in stores in the winter has inspired me to make my own. Thanks to this book I can now look at scarves in stores and figure out how to make my own, and usually for half the price. The patterns in this book aren't the old-fashioned things your grandmother used to knit, but fun modern patterns that include a kitty hat, alien illusion scarf, punk backpack, etc. Once you pick up the basic techniques explained in this book you can pretty much complete any other pattern.
