Kohut geeft psychodynamische inzichten die ook in 2013 nog geniaal zijn. De eerste oplage was in 1968, en ik vind het nog steeds ongelooflijk dat deze inzichten nog zo up to date zijn. Hij beschrijft de structuren van de narcistische persoonlijkheid op een manier die bij ons allemaal soms wat onaangenaam dichtbij komen. Kohut heeft mij woorden gegeven om uit te leggen wat ik al twintig jaar bedoelde te zeggen.
Dit is niet een boek voor de beginner. Het vereist al redelijk inzicht in psychoanalyse, en ondanks dat zijn inzichten geweldig zijn, is Kohut geen schrijver. Naast Gabbard het beste boek wat ik dit jaar gelezen heb.
