I truly enjoyed reading this story. Even though I'm usually not into stories that are set on other planets and feature aliens, this book has kept me entertained until the final page. Actually the whole book could have taken place on earth, when the main character didn't have to travel to some far away planet but to a third world country instead. The struggle he goes through would have been the same. However, Michel Faber adds an extra dimension by introducing his readers to the planet Oasis and I must admit he does a great job in making it feasable that this actually could have happened in this way. I mostly enjoyed reading about how Peter, the preacher, got so absorbed in his new life and environment, that he was unable to take in all the news he received from his wife back on earth. I just loved this book, it's good even if you are not known with biblical facts yourself.

Although the story didn't appeal to me at first, having a somewhat anti-religious opinion, once I started reading I could not stop. The plot is drenched with absurdities and at the same time filled with everyday themes and emotions. When I read that the author was totally exhausted after writing this book and had decided that this was his final novel, I could fully empathize. The Book takes you to a place you've never dreamed of and is filled with layer upon layer of twists, revelations and, above all, it is an emotional rollercoaster. Written in a fluent fashion, with great descriptive power - the "aliens" come alive through words - make this book more than worthwile the read (maybe even twice).

Mijn ebook was prima itt dat van de andere reviewer hier en het verhaal was erg mooi en intrigerend.

Meeslepend en hartverscheurend van begin tot eind. Naar het einde toe zat ik er helemaal in, en het was moeilijk om er afscheid van te nemen. Ik zou iedereen aanraden om dit te lezen.

Ik ben zelf totaal niet gelovig, maar de christelijke elementen pasten perfect binnen de context van het verhaal.

This is a very strange story to be pulled into, but that was exactly what happened. The story amazed me and followed me around in-between reading sessions. I started reading this book without much information about it. Lucky me, if I had known, I probably never would have given it a chance. It’s impossible to summarize its content without giving too much away or scaring other readers off, so I’ll keep it brief: read this book and let Faber’s magic do its work.

Alhoewel één van de thema's mij niet zo interesseert, werd er toch mooi gebruik van gemaakt in het verhaal.
Het is een meeslepend verhaal waarin steeds een beetje meer duidelijk word. Een tikkeltje sci-fi (vind ik niet erg), en lang leesplezier.

Normaliter doet mijn ereader het prima, ik was dan ook verbaasd dat de tekst niet mooi weergegeven werd.
Te weinig ruimte tussen de regels in en de marges. Dit kreeg ik niet aangepast.
Ligt denk ik dus aan het boek en niet aan mijn ereader.

Wel uitgelezen ondanks onprettig lettertype/opmaak.
Verhaalconcept is origineel, maar uiteindelijk wordt het boek wat langdradig.
Voor het verhaal zou ik 3 sterren geven.
Maar ivm de gebrekkige opmaak van het ebook worden dit er 2.
