Dan Hicks begint zijn muzikale carrière in '65 bij The
Charlatans, één van de eerste popgroepen in San Francisco. De groep is afkomstig uit Virginia City
en bestaat uit Hicks (drums), Richard Olsen (bas), Mike Wilhelm (gitaar, zang), George Hunter
(autoharp) en Michael Ferguson (piano). Mede doordat er van de periode '65-'68 geen opnames
bestaan, zijn The Charlatans een typische 'cult'groep. The Charlatans is niet representatief, omdat
de groep dan al uit elkaar is en er snel drie leden opgetrommeld zijn om alsnog een Charlatans-
elpee op de markt te brengen. Dan Hicks is inmiddels (begin '68) voor zichzelf begonnen. Hij
formeert Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks waarin o.m. David LaFlamme (viool). Nog hetzelfde
jaar verlaat LaFlamme de groep om met It's A Beautiful Day te beginnen. De rest van de groep
volgt hem zodat Hicks weer opnieuw mag beginnen. Na verschillende personeelswisselingen
wordt de definitieve bezetting: Hicks (zang, gitaar), Sid Page (viool), John Girton (gitaar), Jaime
Leopold (bas), Maryann Price (zang) en Naomi Eisenberg (zang). Met deze bezetting worden
Where'S The Money en Striking It Rich opgenomen. Last Train To Hicksville, waarop drummer Bob
Scott is toegevoegd, betekent het afscheid van deze gezelligheidsgroep bij uitstek. In '74 treedt
Hicks solo op als Lonesome Dan Hicks. Het jaar daarop schrijft hij de soundtrack voor de film Hey
Good Lookin' en recenseert incidenteel platen voor Rolling Stone. In '79 maakt hij een tournee
door Engeland.
