Samenvatting

A phenomenon that has sent shockwaves across Europe, THE DINNER will be the talking point of the summer. One evening in Amsterdam, two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant. Between mouthfuls of food and the polite scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse. But behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every new course, the knives are being sharpened. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children, and each couple shows just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.

A summer's evening in Amsterdam and two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant. Between mouthfuls of food and over the polite scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse - the banality of work, the triviality of holidays. But behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened. Each couple has a fifteen year old son. The two boys are united by their accountability for a single horrific act; an act that has triggered a police investigation and shattered the comfortable insulated worlds of their families. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children, and as civility and friendship disintegrates, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.

  • Guess who's coming to dinner?

    Positieve punten

    • Goede verhaallijn
    • Meeslepend verhaal

    Negatieve punten

    • easy to get into but then it is cut short

The translation into English is pretty poor. It does not appear to have been translated by a native English writer/speaker.
Besides that, I find the chapters ending too abruptly. I do not know what it is like in Dutch but the chapters appear to end in mid sentence.

  • Heel goed boek! Maar lettertype is vreselijk

    Positieve punten

    • Spannend
    • Grappig
    • Goede verhaallijn

  • Brilliantly paced

The novel’s action takes place within a few hours, in- and outside a very posh restaurant in the eastern part of Amsterdam, not far from the former Ajax-stadium. Two brothers, Paul and Serge and their wives Claire and Babette meet, prompted by Serge, to discuss a situation regarding their children. A brutal killing in Paul’s neighborhood was recorded on a smart phone and put on You Tube. On a nation-wide crime programme, the pictures shown are grainy, but Serge is convinced their sons were the perpetrators…
Paul is the cynical raconteur of a novel that gradually becomes rather disturbing. What he does in life remains long unclear. But his older brother Serge is the opposition leader in parliament, and elections are on the horizon. The two couples have 4 children: Paul and Claire have Michel (15). Serge and Babette have Rick (15), little Valerie (13) and Beau (14-17?), adopted from Burkina Faso.
Technically, “The Dinner” follows the five courses when dining out, starting with the Aperitif and ending with the Tip. In each chapter/course of this very private dinner, small bursts of information are released about the pasts of these diners. Throughout, our guide Paul expresses his disdain for his brother and the hyper-trendy restaurant his brother managed to book so fast. After the Entry, Paul steps out briefly to talk to his son Michel. A first flashback follows about Paul’s past. He is a former history teacher, who relies since Michel’s fourth year on medication to maintain balance.
“The Dinner” starts strongly, never weakens or falters, and page by page becomes more intriguing. No brand names , no side paths, just mounting suspense and horror.
