Bernard Cornwell

Bernard Cornwell was een oorlogsbaby, geboren in het door de oorlog gehavende Londen in 1944.Nadat hij zijn studie aan de Universiteit van Londen had beëindigd en nadat hij tot drie keer toe werd afgekeurd voor een positie in het Britse leger kreeg hij al snel een baan bij BBC's 'Nationwide' en later bij Thames Televisie als redacteur voor Thames Nieuws.

Hij werd in 1979 verliefd op Judy, een Amerikaanse, die wegens familie-omstandigheden terug moest naar de Verenigde Staten.Hij verhuisde met haar mee naar de Verenigde Staten, maar omdat hij geen werkvergunning kreeg begon hij romans te schrijven.Samen met zijn vrouw Judy schreef hij een serie romans onder het speudoniem Susannah Kells: A Crowning Mercy 1983 (over de Engelse burgeroorlog onder Oliver Cromwell), Gevallen Engelen in 1984, en de Aristocraten in 1986.In 1987 kwam 'Redcoat' (Roodjas) uit, een roman over de Amerikaanse Revolutie in Philadelphia in 1777.Hij schreef enkele thrillers die zeilen als achtergrond hadden: Wildtrack 1988, Heer van de Zee 1989, Crackdown in 1990, Kind van de storm 1991 en een politieke thriller die Kwajongen (1992) heette.
