J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) werd geboren in Bloemfontein, Zuid-Afrika. Hij studeerde Engelse taal en literatuur aan de universiteit van Oxford, waar hij later hoogleraar werd. In 1937 publiceerde hij zijn fictiedebuut De hobbit, dat de aanzet was tot zijn wereldberoemde magnum opus In de ban van de ring. Ruim tachtig jaar later wordt Tolkiens werk nog altijd als het begin én het hoogtepunt van het fantasygenre beschouwd.
The map showing A Part of The Shire appears on page 32. The 1980 version of the map of The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age is present in full on page 8 as well as appearing spread over four integral pages. The Map of Gondor, Rohan and Mordor appears on pages 774-775.
This is the 12th Impression but only eleven impressions are listed on the verso of the title page, giving the appearance that it is the 11th Impression. The 10th Impression 1988 is not included in the list of reprints.
