"Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was een Ierse toneelschrijver, schrijver en dichter, die bijna zijn hele leven in Engeland woonde. Hij studeerde klassieke talen in Dublin en vervolgde zijn studie in Oxford. Daar werd hij vooral bekend door zijn rol in de esthetische en decadente beweging, als groot voorstander van het l'art pour l'art-principe.
