George R(aymond) R(ichard) Martin (1948) werd geboren in Bayonne, New Yersey. In zijn vroege jeugd schreef hij al korte verhalen, op de middelbare school levered hij bijdragen aan de comic-fanzines. Zijn eerste, geaccepteerde korte verhaal, The Hero, dat hij schreef als student, verscheen in de februari-editie van het tijdschrift Galaxy.Martin studeerde tot 1970 journalistiek aan Northwestern University. Als erkend gewetensbezwaarde deed hij tot 1974 vervangende dienstplicht bij Chicago's Cook County Legal Assistance en van 1976 tot 1978 doceerde hij journalistiek aan Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. Hier was hij tot 1979writer in residence. Sindsdien heeft hij steevast van de pen geleefd.In 1974 won hij zijn eerste Hugo Award met de novelle A Song for Layla. In 1980 ontving hij zowel de Hugo als de Nebula Award voor de korte novelleSandkings én kreeg hij een Hugo voor het korte verhaal The Cross and the Dragon. In totaal heeft hij de volgende awards gewonnen: 1 Nebula Award, 5 Hugo Awards, 1 Bram Stoker Award, 1 World Fantasy Award en 11 Locus Awards. Zijn bekendste romans zijn onder andere Dying of the Light (1977) en Windhaven met Lisa Tuttle.
