Dit is het een boek in de reeks Rome Total War, het is niet het eerste boek, je hoeft de voorgaande echter niet gelezen te hebben aangezien het boek ook als single novel geklasseerd zou kunnen zijn. Dit is echter niet het geval aangezien alle boeken over Rome in deze reeks te vinden zijn.
Het boek is goed geschreven en geeft het gevoel alsof je zelf in het gevecht zit en toont de terreur van de strijd. In het boek komt er niet zo veel actie voor maar het geeft de gebeurtenissen in het leven van het hoofdpersonage in het toenmalig West-Romeinse Rijk perfect weer.
