Samenvatting
The 'regional nationalisms' of early twentieth century Indonesia are often portrayed either as mere components of the Indonesian nationalist movement or as expressions of 'primordial' ethnic sentiments. In the Minahasa region of North Sulawesi, however, ethnically exclusive local nationalism was an autonomous development caused by many of the same modernizing processes which generated its Indonesian counterpart, only operating on a smaller scale, and beginning at an earlier date.
This book describes and analyses Minahasan regional nationalism in the period up to 1942. Attention is given to precolonial antecedents, to the transformations brought about by compulsory coffee cultivation, Christian mission activity and Western education, to the role of local representative councils, to the privileged position which Minahasans came to occupy relative to other Indonesians within the colonial state, and to the ambiguous relationship between Minahasa and the Indonesian nationalist movement. It is argued that the old stereotype of Minahasa as a bastion of colonial loyalism was as least as overdrawn as the simplified Indonesian nationalist myths which have replaced it, and that what most Minahasan leaders wanted by 1942 was an independent Indonesian commonwealth in which each national group or bangsa, including bangsa Minahasa, would retain political autonomy within a federal framework.
Ideas and models drawn from the theoretical literature on nationalism are used throughout the study to illuminate the processes described. The concluding chapter also includes brief comparisons with other Indonesian regions and with the Philippines, together with an epilogue summarizing the developments of the Japanese occupation and the revolutionary period.
