Samenvatting

How did Virginia become the amazing state that it is today you may wonder? Virginia's Remarkable Women: Daughters, Wives, Sisters, and Mothers Who Shaped History recognizes the women who shaped the Old Dominion. The lives of female teachers, writers, entrepreneurs, and artists from across the state are illuminated through short biographies.

Moving portraits of seventeen independent women who helped make Virginia what it is today Virginia’s Remarkable Women profiles the lives of seventeen resourceful women who displayed remarkable courage as they broke through social, cultural, and political barriers to advance women's roles. These women defied the social norms and prejudices of their time, making lasting contributions to society. Read about: ·Anne Newport Royall, one of the first professional women journalists in the US ·Ellen Glasgow, a determined writer who didn’t let struggles with mental illness and hearing loss prevent her from realizing her dream of winning a Pulitzer Prize ·Maggie Lena Walker, an African American teacher who became the first female bank president in the US to charter a bank ·Patsy Cline, one of America’s most well-known and beloved singers, whose short life was plagued with tragedies Each of these Virginia women demonstrated an independence of spirit that is as inspiring now as it was then.
