In this novel, an American fellow from Tennessee has an interest in Mexico, learning the language and culture, investigating ancient cliff paintings, travelling and exploring. Roland Jocelyn makes repeated trips over a period of several years to a small and quaint town called Bustamante, Nuevo Leon, situated at the foot of a beautiful mountain range, which includes the Lion's Head Mountain.
It is very rare for an American, with no Mexican roots, to visit and spend considerable time in a small town in Mexico. Roland enjoys numerous adventures, both in town and in the mountains, and he enjoys making friends, some of them becoming so special that they influence him to visit Bustamante more frequently.
However, Roland makes some enemies, even though he never does anything intentionally wrong, and he gets himself into some danger at times.
