David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. But the more of the hidden blueprint of life he uncovered, the harder the universe seemed to try to thwart him. His specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquakewhich sent more than a thousand discoveries, housed in fragile glass jars, plummeting to the floor. In an instant, his lifes work was shattered.

Eens in de zoveel tijd lees je een boek waar je op het eind steeds langzamer in gaat lezen omdat je niet wil dat het voorbij is. "why fish don't exist" van Lulu Miller is zo'n boek.

Het verhaal is meeslepend, met onverwachte wendingen, het is intiem én groots, politiek én persoonlijk en op het einde wordt een mysterie onthuld dat me nog maanden na het omslaan van de laatste pagina bezighoudt. Lulu schrijft meeslepend en alles zit in het verhaal: liefde, liefdesverdriet, wetenschap, geschiedenis, mystiek, zelfs 'disability justice' heeft een onverwachte plek. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens gehad over de prachtige illustraties waar elk hoofdstuk mee begint en die de omslag van het boek sieren. Misschien is dit boek niet voor iedereen, maar voor mij is het een van de mooiste boeken die ik dit jaar las.
