Martha Reeves & The Vandellas beginnen als
achtergrondkoortje bij Motown voor Marvin Gaye. Als Mary Wells een keer niet op tijd in de
studio arriveert, mag Martha, die ook als secretaresse bij Motown werkt, het klaarliggende 'I'll
Have To Let Him Go' inzingen. Pas als de groep in '63 met het Holland-Dozier-Holland
produktieteam gaat samenwerken, worden resultaten geboekt. 'Come And Get These Memories'
en 'Heatwave', een goed voorbeeld van geseculariseerde gospel, zijn hits. De wijze waarop The
Vandellas Martha antwoorden en opzwepen is duidelijk op gospel gebaseerd. 'Dancing In The
Street' met een ongewoon zware backing, wordt in '64 een hit. 'Nowhere To Run' en 'Jimmy
Mack' vervolgen in '65 en '67 de serie hits. Na '67 krijgen Martha & The Vandellas het
steeds moeilijker. 'Bless You', dat teruggrijpt naar hun eerste serie hits, is in '71 een laatste hit.
Martha gaat solo en haar eerste solo-elpee (produktie: Richard Perry) is naar verluidt de duurste
flop aller tijden Martha Reeves. Ook later solowerk doet het slecht. Martha's beperkte vocale
mogelijkheden zijn altijd het beste naar voren gekomen op haar up-tempohits uit de jaren
zestig.

Samenvatting

This book uniquely combines gender theory, case studies, and the legal challenges surrounding the mechanisms of gender discrimination at work. It provides the student with real-life examples from managers (based on interviews with people who experienced discrimination) that help students understand how gender discrimination operates, even when there are legal protections against it. At the end of each case study, students are asked to put themselves in the shoes of the individual experiencing the discrimination and ask themselves reflect on how they would handle the situation. Students must examine their own beliefs about gender and work place practices and consider consequences of actions they might take. In addition to the sections of theory, cases, and legal challenges, websites of interest are included student assignments and classroom activities.
