De illustraties zijn bijzonder mooi, maar dit boek is niet geschikt voor serieuze liefhebbers van de oudheid of reenactors omdat er te veel dingen in staan die twijfelachtig of ronduit fout zijn. Er staan bijvoorbeeld verschillend gladii (Romeinse zwaarden) in afgebeeld met een driehoekige "ricasso" zoals dat tegenwoordig wel eens te zien is op goedkope reproducties, maar zeker en vast nooit op echte Romeinse zwaarden. Er wordt ook nooit vermeld op welke afbeeldingen of beschrijvingen ze zich gebaseerd hebben voor een bepaalde illustratie, wat doet vermoeden dat ze een groot deel gewoon zelf hebben verzonnen of nagetekend van andere, moderne interpretaties. Gaat misschien nog net voor kinderen, maar zelfs dan zijn er waarschijnlijk meer historisch verantwoorde boeken te vinden.

- tekst is wat simpel en herhaalt zich soms.
Handig als je snel wat wilt leren over deze periode. Ik gebruik het als voorbeeldenboek voor het schilderen van miniatuurtjes. Verwacht geen diepgravende tekst. Soms herhaalt die zich zelfs een beetje...
