Greek and Roman warfare differed from other cultures and was unlike any other forms of warfare before and after. The key difference is often held to be that the Greeks and Romans practised a 'Western Way of War', where the aim is an open, decisive battle, won by courage instilled in part by discipline. Harry Sidebottom looks at how and why this 'Western Way of War' was constructed and maintained by the Greeks and Romans, why this concept is so popular and prevalent today, and at whether or not this is an accurate interpretation. All aspects of ancient warfare are thoroughly examined - from philosophy and strategy to the technical skills needed to fight. He looks at war in the wider context - how wars could shape classical society, and how the individual's identity could be constructed by war, for example the Christian soldier fighting in God's name. He also explores the ways in which ancient society thought about conflict: Can a war be just? Why was siege warfare particularly bloody? What role did divine intervention play in the outcome of a battle? Taking fascinating examples from the Iliad, Tacitus, and the Persian Wars, Sidebottom uses arresting anecdotes and striking visual images to show that the any understanding of ancient war is an ongoing process of interpretation. Dit boek heb ik gekocht n.a.v. de "Warrior of Rome" serie van dezelfde schrijver. De serie beviel me prima! Toch vond ik het, gezien mijn eigen beperkte kennis over de achtergrond van het verhaal, zeer nodig om me in te lezen over de periode waarin de serie zich afspeelt.
"Ancient Warfare" geeft in korte tijd een goed en uitgebreid beeld van de manieren van oorlog voeren in o.a. de Romeinse tijd en de invloed die o.a. de Grieken en hun gebruiken op de Romeinse oorlogsmachine hadden. Zeer aan te raden als naslagwerk bij bovengenoemde serie, maar ook bij andere historische romans over de Romeinse tijd.
I bought this book after reading the "Warrior of Rome" series of the same author. The series were very popular with me! However, I felt that because of my own limited knowledge of the background of the stories, I needed to learn more about this period of time.
"Ancient Warfare" gives the reader a clear view of the way warfare was conducted during the Roman and Greek times (amongst others) and also the influence of the Greeks on the Roman war-machine. I highly recommend this book as back-up to the "Warrior of Rome" series and other adventure books about this era!Vond je dit een nuttige review?00 -
