In treating this branch of our subject, the several counties of the State have been taken up in alphabetical order, as being an arrangement tending best to promote convenience of reference. Originally there were in California but twenty-seven counties; there are now fifty-two. Klamath, one of the original counties, has been extinguished, and the territory of which it was composed annexed to Siskiyou and Hum- boldt.
