Boek is lastig leesbaar door een zeer compacte stijl. Het streven dat alles vermeld moet worden lukt, maar maakt toegang moeilijk. Ik heb het boek al aan meedere mensen aangeraden wegens de heel andsere blik. De samenhang van ondergang Heilige Roomsche Rijk, Reformatie, Natievorming en de dreiging van de Ottomanen wordt geloofwaardig gemaakt.

Je moet een behoorlijke kennis van de Engelse taal hebben om je hier doorheen te worstelen. Boek is ook niet chronologisch maar beschrijft per onderwerp, wat het nogal onsamenhangend maakt.
