Taylor Downing studeerde geschiedenis aan Latymer Upper en Christ's College in Cambridge. Downing werkte jarenlang voor het Imperial War Museum in Londen. Daarnaast runt hij een productiebedrijf, Flashback Television, dat meer dan tweehonderd documentaires maakte, waaronder een aantal bekroonde historische films.
