Als je twijfelt om dit deel van de Riftwar Cycle te halen, wel doen! Beste boek so far

Terwijl de meeste fantasy die ik tot nu toe gelezen heb zich afspelen in een meer westerse samenleving, is dit verhaal duidelijk beïnvloed door de (Oost-)Aziatische wereld. Iets wat ik zelf erg verfrissend vond. Verder komt er ook wat politiek in voor vermengd met Aziatische normen en waarden, wat het verhaaal misschien wat moeilijk kan maken. Zelf had ik hier echter geen problemen mee, aangezien ik vanaf het begin al sterk werd meegenomen in het verhaal. Een echte aanrader!

Mere seconds before being initiated as a priestess the Tsurani girl Mara is recalled to her estate to succeed her father, the Lord of house Acoma who perished in a plot of a rival clan. Being the last of the Acoma Mara can be certain to have a tough time ahead of her.

‘Daughter of the Empire’ is set in the world of Tsuranuanni, a strictly hierarchical society strongly based on concepts of honor and tradition and which is unmistakably inspired by feudal era Japan. It takes place during the riftwar described in Feist’s earlier work ‘Magician’, although the war only plays a marginal role in this trilogy. Like the other books of the Empire trilogy this novel focuses on political machinations and intrigue rather than flashy action and otherworldly threats. In that respect the Empire Trilogy is less epic than the Riftwar Saga, but demonstrates that a more personal tale with strong characterization can be all the more engaging. The story of ‘Daughter of the Empire’ is reminiscent of a fantasy version of the Godfather when Mara, inexperienced as she is, becomes the victim of circumstances and has to take up the title of Lady of the Acoma, having to rule with an unforgiving iron grip to seek retribution against those responsible for her family’s demise even if it will only come at great personal expense. Decimated as house Acoma is Mara must take unconventional measures and vertiginous risks by bending tradition to the extreme in order to survive in the deadly Game of the Council. It has to be said that her plans seem to rely a bit too heavily on elements of chance and flawless timing for the plotting to be entirely convincing. On the other hand the portrayal of the concerns and behavior of the characters is completely believable given the Tsurani society. The cooperation with Janny Wurts bears fruit as the Empire trilogy is arguable Feist’s best work.

Even if it is not strictly required the reading pleasure is greatly enhanced if one has at least read ‘Magician’ beforehand.

Dit geeft een kijkje in wereld van de Tsuranuanni, de andere kant van de riftwar.
Ben nu 3/4 maar de andere 2 delen liggen al klaar.

Raymond Feist heeft in zijn universum vele aan elkaar gelinkte series geschreven. De Empire-trilogie behoort tot mijn favorieten in deze reeks. Wellicht door invloed van zijn co-auteur voelen de personages echter, meer menselijk. Een grote aanrader!
