Voor een tuinvarenverzamelaar als ik is er natuurlijk één bijbel en dat is het boek van Martin Rickard. Dat boek bevat echter helaas vrij weinig duidelijke afbeeldingen. Het boek van Sue Olsen is dan ook een zeer welkome en mooie aanvulling. Bovendien bespreekt zij een aantal variëteiten die iets recenter zijn.
Wel richt het boek zich voornamelijk tot de Amerikaanse tuinier, dus niet alle zaken die "winterhard" zouden zijn in bepaalde zones zijn dat per definitie ook in ons klimaat.
