Macrae geeft in zijn boek “Mastering Interest Rate Risk Strategy” een overzicht van rente risico strategieën. Hij start met een beschrijving van een aantal derivaten blunders de afgelopen jaren en weet vervolgens op een eenvoudige maar uiterst doeltreffende wijze de drivers achter deze blunders bloot te leggen. Hij toont op nauwkeurige wijze aan dat daar waar derivaten bedoeld zijn als risico mitigerende instrumenten deze tegelijkertijd zorgen voor een verhoging van het risico.
Het boek gaat echter dieper dan alleen derivaten. Het behandelt financiering en met name de daarmee samenhangende rente risico’s. De toegevoegde waarde van Macrae’s boek zit hem met name in de eenvoudige en heldere wijze waarop hij de impact van rente bewegingen op balans en verlies en winstrekening beschrijft. Daarbij neemt hij ook de impact mee op een aantal financiële ratio’s mee en dat is een bonus want dat deze worden in de literatuur veelal minder behandeld.

The book can live up to it’s front page promise of being a practical guide. Helped with several (and simplified) practical examples in Part One and explaining basic financials definitions in Part Two and Three, the topic is being introduced to non-financial professionals.

As of part Four, the book gets more into details on hedging strategy and solutions in the markets and become more interesting for relevant professionals. Having said this, the most interesting part may be somewhat underexposed, ie. How to formulate the optimal strategy”.

Ik heb dit boek gelezen en vind dat iedere bestuurder en toezichthouder van organisaties die met derivaten te maken krijgen dit boek moet lezen. Ook voor niet financieel geschoolde academici een zeer duidelijk boek. Met deze inzichten voorkomen we in Nederland een nieuwe VESTIA-affaire.
