  • Book three of the Empire Trilogy.

Things seem to have finally settled down for Mara when an assassination attempts kills her son and only heir instead of herself. The time of peace is over …

‘Mistress of the Empire’ brings the story of the Empire of Tsuranuanni to its wonderful crescendo. While the previous two books focused on the survival of Mara and house Acoma, in this concluding part of the Empire Trilogy it is the empire itself that is under threat of civil war. Mara has to defy devastating danger to preserve the changes that she has brought about in the politics and the social structure of the Tsurani. The pacing of this book is higher as in previous books and starting from the first page the tension is at an implacable high level. Moreover, the storytelling is much more varied: It contains a detective story to find an antidote, clashes between vast armies, magical power play, travels to distant places as well as an unfolding and refining of the culture and society of the Cho-ja. Some parts of the story are written from the point of view of the spy master Arakasi. The profound personal changes that he undergoes on his pursuits are very insightful and are among the highlights of this novel. Also the Great Ones and in particular their role in Tsurani society and history is further explored while they start to actively participate in the Game of the Council. Stereotypes are skillfully avoided as all characters, good and bad, are sincerely portrayed in their motivations. ‘Mistress of the Empire’ will keep you on the edge of your seat for many different reasons. It is a delightful story and arguably the finest novel set in the Riftwar universe. Raymond E Feist continued writing many more books in the Riftwar universe, although most are well below the quality of ‘Magician’ and the Empire Trilogy. There was an upturn with the Conclave of Shadows trilogy, which is advised as the place to continue for those that would like to spend some more time in Midkemia.
