Productbeschrijving
The true life story of an Irish nurse working in America in the Seventies. Her tale vividly describes life in the States during that era and the hard work involved in dealing with patients from all walks of life. A must read, particularly for anyone from Europe wishing to pursue a career in the USA. Sample from My American Dream November 1970. These are true stories. What a journey lay ahead of me. Dublin to Shannon and on to Montreal. Even further to go. A flight to Chicago and onwards to Texas. At last I had arrived at the location that was to become my home and place of work. Thankfully my job and accommodation had already been set up for me in advance. I only had to pay my own airfare. I had arrived with $100 and the wish of making a better life for myself. An Irish nurse a long way from a small village in Ireland. I had affairs to organise on arrival in Texas. Lots of forms to fill out for Social Security and tax forms also. My first impressions on arrival in the USA were that it was similar to a smaller version of London. My accommodation was fine. I had a double bedroom with a sink and a closet. Other nurses from other countries were also in the same accommodation building. We would go down the corridor to shower. Nurses from England, Ireland, Australia and Africa were there too. I was now living in a large town in Texas with around a population of 500,000 people. The 500,000 population has now reached 6 million after the Dallas Fort Worth airport was built in 1976. We were now ready for our 6-week nursing orientation classes. I was amazed at the attitudes some of the staff had towards us as Europeans. Some of the Americans were asking what were we doing there and how did I get to Texas? Some didn't believe that Ireland had any airplanes to which I remarked I flew over from a field on a big bird!
