The Bradt Guide is the only specialized guide about Macedonia. Isn’t that unbelievable? Luckily, it is a GREAT guide, very useful to everybody visiting this lovely country.

The first 120 pages are dedicated to the useful practical information one might need when visiting a country never visited before. But this guide goes a step further than the usual info about language, religion, money, getting around, where to sleep and what to eat. It offers a deeper insight into the culture of Macedonia. This is especially of great help when traveling off-the-beaten-track.

The following 200 pages is the actual travel guide, that will lead you through the capital city of Skopje to the touristy UNESCO town of Ohrid and all the sights in between. Especially for the sights in between this Bradt guide proves its worth.

The last chapter of the book is a hiking guide. Macedonia has a lot of beautiful countryside waiting to be explored by foot. The twelve hikes mentioned are only suitable for the fit though – Macedonia is a mountainous country after all. So far, I did only three of the twelve hikes mentioned, but they were all splendid.

My favorite quote: “Macedonian hospitality is extensive and often overpowering. Trying to say no is extremely difficult without being rude, unless you have some handy pressing excuse, like ‘I will turn into a pumpkin at midnight if I don’t leave right now’. In other words, no excuse will be satisfactory.”
