Samenvatting

A re-issue of the first novel from the internationally acclaimed prize-winning writer.

A saga of flight and pursuit, this novel chronicles the adventures of Alu, a young weaver who is wrongly suspected of being a terrorist. Chased from Bengal to Bombay and on through the Persian Gulf to North Africa by a bird-watching police inspector, Alu encounters along the way a cast of characters as various and as colourful as the epithets with which the author adorns them. The reader is drawn into their lives by incidents tender and outrageous and all compellingly told. Ghosh is as natural a weaver of words as Alu is of cloth, deftly interlacing humour and wisdom to produce a narrative tapestry of surpassing beauty.

One subject of the greatness and very sociable reading of Amitav Ghosh his writing is that the novel has many stories during the main plot. You like it or not, his style makes for me the Circle of Reason a beautiful fantastic novel, for me it is a fascinating pageturner. Describing the real life in India makes the story very realistic.
i missed a bit the plot with accussed from terrorism Alu being followed by a bird-watching policeman. The accent in the novel is moreover a headmaster of a village in the South of India fascinating by germs(India!)and the life of Louis Pasteur. His dream to give abundant children a chance in life, like Alu, who despite doesn't like to go to school but he realy wants to be a weaver. This headmaster dreams to build a new school where you can study economics, languages etc. ánd weaving in such a combination students can start a business in real life: The school of Reason. Together with an adventure telling about trade of people from the east to the west with a remarkable strong woman character, Zindi. One thing more: just read this novel, you definitely are going to have a good time.
