Forever War The science fiction classic and thought-provoking critique of war

Een in 1974 geschreven Sci Fi verhaal waar we William Mandella volgen wie het leger in gaat om te strijden tegen een buitenaards ras dat de mensheid bedreigt. Het leven van een soldaat is in '97 niet heel spectaculair, het reizen naar andere planeten is niet heel spannend en het opzetten van een oorlosbasis op een onbekende planeet is erg gevaarlijk. Een pluspunt is dat, als je heelhuids weer thuis komt, je steen rijk bent, als Soldaat verdien je niet heel veel, maar het feit dat je lichtjaren ver van de Aarde vandaan werkt en doormiddel van Collapsar jumps reist zullen er tientallen of honderden jaren verstreken zijn in wat voor jou een paar maanden lijkt te zijn aan boord van een ruimteschip, en een maandsalaris in combinatie met rente gedurende een eeuw zorgen voor een leuk zakje geld. Maar dat zorgt er ook voor dat elke keer dat je van een missie terug keert je hele wereld min of meer verdwenen is.

Het verhaal speelt zich af tussen 1997 en 3143, William bestijgt in die tijd de militaire ladder van simpele soldaat tot Majoor en is die hele periode in gevecht met de Taurans, een buitenaards ras waar verder weinig over bekend is.

Het boek is erg goed geschreven en Haldeman maakt uitstekend gebruik van technologie, het verhaal is in '74 geschreven en begint (voor hem) 20 jaar in de toekomst en duurt dan ruim 1100 jaar waarin er steeds nieuwe technologie tevoorschijn komt. Ondanks dat we in 1997 natuurlijk niet de beschikking hadden over ruimtevaart mogelijkheden om een wereldwijd leger naar een ander zonnestelsel te sturen komt de technologie niet vreemd over, alles is wat globaal beschreven en het verhaal is gefocust op het verhaal, de technologie is bijzaak en het feit dat er in 2007 op Aarde eigenlijk geen gebruik gemaakt wordt van mobiele telefoons, tablets of zelfs internet en dergelijke maar men wel op de maan woont en om te communiceren onder anderen brievenpost heen en weer stuurt doen niet af aan de geloofwaardigheid.

Het verhaal is redelijk simpel geschreven en is makkelijk te volgen en brengt heel goed de gevoelens van de personages over en zetten je aan het denken over hoe je zelf zou omgaan met de situaties waar William in terecht komt. Zeker een aanrader voor de sci fi fans.

Fantasierijk, dat is wat ik er goed aan vind.

Zeer goed boek in het Engels. Onwaarschijnlijk aangrijpend verhaal dat ik op 3 dagen heb uitgelezen. Dit is het beste science-fiction boek dat ik in mijn kast heb zitten! mvg

‘The Forever War’ is a short novel written in 1974 that combines elements of military science fiction with a dystopian world view. It delineates the harshness of military life and effectively uses the idea of time debt obtained by the time dilation during space jumps to portray the alienation and isolation of a soldier returning to a society that has changed profoundly from the one that he grew up in.

Joe Haldeman’s own experience during the Vietnam War was an important inspiration for this book. At the same time it could also very well be the reason why this story feels like a military briefing. It is written as a first-person narrative from the point of view of private William Mandella and is mostly composed of short snippy chapters, making large chronological leaps and rushing through the story at great speed in what is predominantly an emotionless account of events. There is just no time to grow attached to any of the characters, which is anyway very difficult as their feelings and thoughts remain largely undisclosed. Supposedly the book is more about a soldier’s life and the hardships associated with it than it is about the characters themselves. Admittedly, the ideas of time dilation and the resulting isolation are compelling, but due to the impersonal matter-of-fact writing style you are likely to just stop caring at some point. Although towards the end of the story it becomes more delectable one is left with the feeling that ‘The Forever War’ is a book with a great and original premise, but with a less than engaging execution thereof.
