Historicus en filosoof Luuk van Middelaar (1973) is sedert 2010 speechwriter en politiek adviseur van de eerste president van de Europese Raad, Herman Van Rompuy. Van Middelaar studeerde in Groningen en Parijs, en is in Amsterdam gepromoveerd. Zijn debuut Politicide (1999) werd onmiddellijk bekroond met de prestigieuze ‘Prix de Paris’. Zijn Passage naar Europa (2009) is door de Nederlandse en Vlaamse filosofen in 2010 gezamenlijk uitgeroepen tot het meest uitdagende filosofieboek van het jaar, en getooid met de ‘Socrates Prijs’. In Franse vertaling is De passage naar Europa uitverkoren tot het beste boek over Europa, en in 2012 bekroond met de Europese ‘Prix du Livre’. Sindsdien maakt De passage naar Europa een internationale triomftocht met vertalingen in onder meer het Frans, Hongaars, Engels, Pools, Spaans, Chinees, Ests en Arabisch.
