And back in England, the third novel, Some Hope, offers a sober and clean Patrick the possibility of recovery. The fourth novel, the Booker-shortlisted Mother's Milk, returns to the family chateau, where Patrick, now married and a father himself, struggles with child rearing, adultery, his mother's desire for assisted suicide, and the loss of the family home to a New Age foundation.

Het leest zo weg, zonder zijn sterke psychologische en literaire kracht te verliezen. Alle vijf de boeken hebben hun eigen kracht opdat ze verschillende periodes uit Patrick's leven behandelen: het misbruikte kind, de heroïneverslaafde jongvolwassene, de reflectieve en afgekickte dertiger, de alcoholverslaafde en depressieve vader en een man die volwassen is. Een extra kracht van de boeken is dat de lezer niet vast zit in Patrick's brein maar dat, net zoals bij veel grote romans uit de laatste honderd jaar, je Patrick's situatie ook meemaakt vanuit het perspectief van anderen. Ik zou durven zeggen dat Edward St. Aubyn, voornamelijk vanwege deze serie boeken, samen met Michel Houellebecq, de grootste romanschrijver van de 21ste eeuw tot nu toe is.

Dit boek was me erg aanbevolen, maar ik vond het niet zo boeiend. De Engelse upperclass, drugs en drank en vreemdgaan, je moet er van houden.
