  • Asimov’s third Robot novel

‘The Robots of Dawn’ is the third and final Elijah Baley SF crime novel in Asimov’s The Robot series. This time Baley has to go to the Outer planet Aurora to come to the aid of mankind’s leading roboticist Han Fastolfe whom Baley has met previously on Earth when he was coupled to his robot partner Daneel Olivaw. Through his role in Auroran politics Fastolfe has become the only hope to the people of Earth of colonizing the galaxy. All of this as well as Baley’s professional reputation are at risk unless he can prove Fastolfe’s innocence of the incapacitation of one of the only two humaniform robots in existence. Due to the unusual nature of the case and backed by an unwilling and eccentric Auroran community Baley’s task seems utterly hopeless. The desperation becomes genuinely palpable as he grows increasingly more paranoid, having to doubt everything around him. Upon this the novel develops into a real page turner and a very satisfying conclusion of the Elijah Baley crime stories. It was written more than two-and-a-half decades after ‘Caves of Steel’ and ‘The Naked Sun’ and in the meantime Asimov’s storytelling has gone through a great deal of maturing. Compared to its predecessors the story of ‘The Robots of Dawn’ is more multilayered and the characters and dialogues more discerning. In addition the book provides further detailed investigation of the essential similarities and differences of humanity and ‘roboticity’. All these aspects turn ‘The Robots of Dawn’ into a highly addictive read. With a first prudent appearance of the psychohistorical ideas of ‘laws of mentology’ it moreover becomes evident that by this time Asimov had formed an explicit intention of unifying his Robot and Foundation series. The definitive connection was established with ‘Robots and Empire’. Anyone who is planning to continue with that book is therefore strongly advices to first read the Foundation trilogy.
