Patti Smith

"Patricia Lee (Patti) Smith (Chicago (Illinois), 30 december 1946) is een Amerikaanse singer-songwriter en dichteres. Zij wordt beschouwd als één van de grondleggers van het punkgenre in New York. Vandaar ook haar bijnaam ""The Godmother of Punk"". Haar werk is een fusie van rock en poëzie. Smiths bekendste nummer is ""Because the Night"", dat ze samen schreef met Bruce Springsteen. Het nummer bereikte de 13e plaats in de Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. In 2005 werd Smith benoemd tot Commandeur in de Franse Ordre des Arts et des Lettres door de Franse minister van cultuur en in 2007 werd haar naam toegevoegd in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio. Op 17 november 2010 won ze de National Book Award voor haar memoires Just Kids. In 2011 won Smith een Polar Music Prize. Patricia Lee Smith werd geboren in Chicago. Haar moeder, Beverly, was een dienster, haar vader, Grant, was arbeider bij Honeywell. Ze bracht haar hele jeugd door in Deptford Township, New Jersey. Smiths ouders waren Jehova's getuigen en ze kreeg een strenge, religieuze en Bijbelgerichte opvoeding. In haar tienerjaren verliet ze deze organisatie omdat ze deze te beklemmend en te begrensd vond. Jaren later schreef ze in haar coverversie van het nummer ""Gloria"" van de band Them de zinsnede Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine (""Jezus is gestorven voor iemands zonden, maar niet de mijne""). Smith behaalde in 1964 haar diploma aan de Deptford Township High School en ging aan de slag in een fabriek. Ze beviel op 26 april 1967 van haar eerste kind, een dochter, en koos ervoor het kind af te staan voor adoptie.
