Samenvatting

For more than forty years, Isaac Asimov thrilled millions of readers with his bestselling Foundation series, a spellbinding tale of the future that spans thousands of years and dozens of worlds. Completed just weeks before his death in April 1992, Forward the Foundation is the seventh and concluding volume of this masterwork, which was awarded a Hugo for the 'Best All-Time Science Fiction Series'. In the earlier Foundation novels, Hari Seldon, the guiding genius of the Foundation, was a figure of history. By going back to the great mathmatician's life, in Forward the Foundation, Asimov fills in the remaining gaps in his epic story. Asimov acknowledged that he always regarded Seldon as his alter ego, and this novel is all the more poignant for the fact that he himself died only weeks after writing about Seldon's death. A resounding tour de force, Forward the Foundation offers the dramatic climax to the Foundation series, and perhaps the greatest moment in science fiction to date.

  • Second prequel of the original Foundation trilogy

‘Forward the Foundation’ is the last Foundation novel written by Asimov during his lifetime and covers the period between ‘Prelude to Foundation’ and ‘Foundation’. Both may therefore be considered required reading for this novel. ‘Forward the Foundation’ starts eight years after ‘Prelude to Foundation’ and consists of five parts, each separated by a decade. They exhibit the science of psychohistory at different stages of development culminating eventually in the realization of the two Foundations. One consequence of this setup is that there is not really one continuous plotline. Rather, it strongly gives the impression of being a patchwork of snapshots in time with limited essential relevance for the overarching storyline of the Foundation, Empire and Robot series and with as only intention to fill in the gaps between The Foundation trilogy and its first prequel. Unfortunately this recipe makes for the most unengaging and at times even plainly dull book set in the Foundation Universe that is simply not up to par with the high quality of the other Foundation novels. Clearly, ‘Forward the Foundation’ is suitable only for the most devoted fans of the Foundation/Empire/Robot series. Of course, despite all of this it is nonetheless mandatory reading for those dedicated fans who may anyway find a source of interest in the background information that it provides to the series.

People that have read all of Asimov’s Foundation and Robot novels and still cannot get quite enough of it are referred to ‘End of Eternity’ (also written by Asimov) which has a connection to the Foundation Universe, albeit an elusive one. Those that are looking for more epic science fiction in the same vein as the Foundation novels may also like ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ by Arthur C Clarke or ‘Hyperion’ by Dan Simmons.
