Avi Shlaim was born in Baghdad in 1945, grew up in Israel, and studied at Cambridge University and the London School of Economics. He is an emeritus fellow of St. Anthony's College and a former professor of international relations at the University of Oxford. He was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 2006. In the 1920s, hard-line Zionists developed the doctrine of the 'Iron Wall': negotiations with the Arabs must always be from a position of military strength, and only when sufficiently strong Israel would be able to make peace with her Arab neighbours. This book focuses on Israeli foreign policy.
