William Wordsworth

William Wordsworth was born in 1770 at Cockermouth in the Lake District and educated at Cambridge. As a young man he was fired with enthusiasm for the French Revolution but the year he spent in France after graduating left him disillusioned with radical politics. He turned more seriously to literature and, in collaboration with his friend Coleridge, produced Lyrical Ballads (1798). His return to the Lake District in 1799 marked the beginning of his most productive period as a poet, during which he wrote his most famous long poem, The Prelude (1805). Stephen Gill a Professor of English Literature at Oxford University and a Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford. He holds degrees from Oxford and Edinburgh Universities and is a long-serving member of the Wordsworth Trust. Samenvatting

Lyrical Ballads and other Poems represents a pivotal offering in the landscape of English literature, bringing together the formidable talents of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This collection signifies a watershed moment in the Romantic Movement, espousing the primacy of the individual experience, the natural world, and the emotive power of language. The diversity within this anthology is profound, traversing the pastoral to the sublime, and effectively reshaping the literary horizon of its time. The inclusion of pieces such as 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and 'Tintern Abbey' demonstrates the range and depth of thematic explorations undertaken by the poets, advocating a bold departure from the classical constraints of the 18th century towards a more personal and introspective dialogue with nature. The collaborative genesis of Lyrical Ballads mirrors the intertwined destinies and complementary visions of Wordsworth and Coleridge, both central figures in the English Romantic revolt against Enlightenment rationalism. Their combined legacy, rooted in disparate yet harmonious poetic philosophies, epitomizes the spirit of an era relentless in its pursuit of emotional authenticity and linguistic simplicity. This anthology not only showcases the individual genius of Wordsworth and Coleridge but also epitomizes the collective zeitgeist that propelled Romanticism to the forefront of an evolving cultural narrative. Lyrical Ballads and other Poems invites readers on a journey through the multifaceted realms of human emotion, nature's impermanent beauty, and the inherent yearning for transcendence that defines the human condition. It is an essential compendium for those wishing to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Romantic thought and to appreciate the monumental shift it represented in literary history. This collection promises not just a scholarly exploration of foundational poetic works but a participatory experience in the ongoing dialogue between humanity and the sublime.
